National Mincemeat Day (or Mince Meat Day)
So what is National Mincemeat Day all about? National Mincemeat Day is on October 26th, and it is a day that celebrates a sweet and tasty meat treat. Mincemeat goes all the way back to medieval times when people mixed fruit with meat as a way to help the meat and other food last longer. It was a mixture of chopped meats (usually beef), suet (hard white fat from the meat), and fruits like pears raisins, apples, and It was often eaten as a sweet treat. However, mincemeat became less well known during the last half of the 1900’s as refrigeration became the way people keep their food from going bad. This is why a whole generation, even two generations, have grown up not knowing about mincemeat. Today, mincemeat is best known and served as mince meat pie, a pie with little or no meat. Mince meat pie is mostly fruit and is still a traditional Thanksgiving pie in many households.
